Yoga for Haiti: Youer than YOU

I don’t know about y’all, but it’s easy to forget YOU.

You are the only you.

No one else is like you. No matter what.

So let it be a good you. The best you you can possibly be.  Because there’s no one else. But YOU!

For the past four years, some amazing ladies in St. Petersburg, Florida have raised money for Haiti through a yearly yoga fundraiser. This year, on January 6, 2013, eighty-eight yogis of all levels gathered underneath the Chihuly chandelier in the Renaissance Vinoy’s Grand Ballroom.

Check out the gorgeous Chihuly sculpture in the background!

We gathered to support the Mirebalis hospital project and Partners in Health through a donation-based two hour yoga class taught by fabulous teachers Rita Knorr and Jaye Martin.  With live music by the band Element Tao, the class promised to offered to “rejuvenate your body and restore your soul.”

Rita and Jaye. Apparently the woman who made Rita’s AMAZING pants was in attendance. I didn’t get to meet her, but I need to connect. Those yoga pants are fantastic! Photo by Mary Allen.
As teachers in the Anusara tradition, Jaye and Rita’s heart-opening message was clear.  While the class was an offering to Haiti, the class also served as an offering to yourself. An opportunity to reconnect with that long lost best friend–you. To open yourself up to greatness. As Jaye eloquently reminded us, it is not the whether the jar is half empty or half full–the important thing is that you have a jar.

We are those jars.  We need to remember that we have the capacity for greatness and how we chose to be the best ME we can be is in our hands.  We set our own intentions. We can determine how we carry our hearts and souls out into the world.

And the best part?

You don’t have to be YOU alone.

Friendship. Trust. Support.

Other people are there to aid you. To guide you. To lend you a helping hand.

All you need to do is allow yourself to let go, to share, and chip in when someone else needs assistance. To not be afraid to ask when you need assistance.  And let go of the fear of allowing someone else to help carry the burden.

Partner yoga, group balancing, togetherness.  Despite each of us being our own special individuals, Rita and Jaye had us come together. We supported one another in balancing poses, in back-bends, in practice.  It wasn’t always comfortable to hold hands with a stranger. But sometimes, you have to sit in the uncomfortableness in order to blossom. To rise to greatness. To find that authentic you.

I was lucky to be in a circled-up, shoulder-hugging, back-bending vrksasana (tree) with some lovely teachers, including Laura, Tara, and Katelyn (shown below). With the arms of my yogi friends around me, I opened my heart to the unknown. I forgot that I was balancing on one leg. I forgot that, sometimes, I’m afraid of back-bends.  I gave in to the group and smiled with the results. A smile inside and out. Soul restored, indeed!

With Katelyn of the super fun and fabulous blog beerasana.com. Have you read it? YOU SHOULD!

No one can be more you than you. And when we give in to trust, allow others to be there for us, and, most importantly, remember to be there for ourselves, we can really shine.

Be the best you you can be. You can’t be anyone but you. You’re special–in a good way. Embrace it.

Are you being the most authentic and true you that you can possibly be?

Why not?

Why are you waiting?

As Dr. Seuss says, “Today is your day. Your mountain is waiting. So…get on your way!”

You’re most awesome and true YOU is always there. Waiting for you to remember to look!

What a great event! It’s so true. People get so wrapped up in being a person others want them to be or what they perceive as an ideal person. But each of us should always strive to be the most authentic you. Such an important message!
