Just remember to breathe!

Stop in the name of breath!

Sometimes things don’t go the way we want them to. And it can happen suddenly.

It may mean:

We get in car accidents.

We get fired.

We find out a loved one is terminally ill.

We have a break-up.

We get a bad bill in the mail.

We get sued.

We don’t get the book published.

We don’t finish the race.

We have kids who fall down on the playground.

You get the picture.

Bad things happen.
Things that feel ICKY happen.

Stuff we don’t WANT sometimes happens.

And we can’t wave a magic wand and make it better.

But we can take a deep breath.

We can take a moment, to connect to what is REALLY happening.

And then things can get a bit easier.

You may act more kindly to the stranger who hit your car. You may find a moment of compassion before leaping to worst case scenario. You may just find the ability to get, even if only for a moment, grounded.

We all get stressed. We all get distracted. We all have freak-outs.

But it’s how you handle those moments. How you get to the next moment. That time in the face of sorrow, anger, pain, hurt, fear that says a lot about who we are.

Do we want to be the person who reacts with anger, with sorrow, with hatred, with despair and negativity? Or do we want to be the kind of person who breathes IN the fear, breathes IN the reality, and focuses on the positive elements within his or her control?

I want to be the latter.

And I get upset. I get scared. I get uncomfortable. Trust me. Bad stuff ain’t no fun.

But we can take a deep breath.

We can come back to the moment.

And then we can face the ickiness head on. Present. Fully aware. And acting from a compassionate place.

So take a deep breath.

I just did.

And let’s pledge to breathe no matter what. No matter how difficult. To remember that it is not all bad, it is not all extremes, to find the here and now.

And trust that good things are always coming. Even if you can’t see them. Or even if you feel hopeless.

There’s always something good. Every storm stops. The sunshine comes back out. Sometimes, there’s even a pretty amazing rainbow in the middle.

But you won’t see any of the positive unless you can find the now. Find the grounding. Root yourself in the here and now. Compassionately, honestly, and lovingly.

And all it takes is a deep breath.

When the going gets tough, just remember to breath.
