Valentine’s Day for me is always an interesting affair.
As a child I LOVED IT. My birthday is February 15. I loved hearts, the color pink, and cupcakes. I was popular, happy, and outgoing. I gave a Valentine to EVERYONE. I received an awful lot. I thought of Valentine’s Day as an extension of my own birthday. A pre-birthday celebration wherein I got to tell all my friends that they were super an awesome. And eat chocolate. I loved everyone all the time, so why not tell them AND celebrate my birthday? Win-win, right?
Here I am, sometime around Valentine’s Day with my childhood best friend (and still current bestie!):
Then I grew older and the media frenzy around Valentine’s day has also grown. And now when I tell people my birthday is the day after Valentine’s Day the response is “Oh I’m so sorry.” Huh.
Yes, Valentine’s Day is a cheesy Hallmark card. I can tell you that I’ve had some amazing Valentine’s Days, I’ve had some ho-hum ones, and I’ve probably had some truly horrible ones (a middle school prank from a group of mean girls will always make me shudder). But, overall, I actually like Valentine’s Day. It’s silly. But it’s a wonderful reminder of how we should love each and every single day.
I love my life. I love the people in it. And, gosh darn it all, I try to let them know that I appreciate them as often as possible. I probably don’t do it as much as I should. Valentine’s Day is an opportunity for me to tell the people in my life how much I care, how much they mean to me on all the days of the year that AREN’T holidays. It’s a chance to remind myself that I love ME too. And to appreciate all the good stuff about me. (Because, at the end of the day, you are your own best Valentine.)
So this Valentine’s Day I ask that you, no matter how you feel about the day, find some joy. Use it as an opportunity to better love the important people in your world. To love your life! Because each and every day it’s the loving that matters the most.
