Gasparilla Film Fest
I’ve been lucky enough to catch a few of the films, parties, and more! I can’t wait for all the events this weekend–including industry panels, a big party, and some awesome films! (I’m looking forward to catching Preggoland on Sunday!)
We had a blast for opening night at the Tampa Theatre on Tuesday!
It’s always fun to be on the red carpet!
I also got to meet Captain Fear, the mascot for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers! Arr!
The most exciting part, however, was the movie and Q&A!
The opening film was the Surface Movie starring Sean Astin and Chris Mulkey, directed by Gil Cates, Jr. The inspiring film follows two strangers brought together on the choppy waters of Lake Michigan who discover faith, hope, and an unlikely friendship on the water. Astin and Mulkey deliver powerful performances and they, along with Cates, writer Jeff Gendelman and cinematographer Jimmy Sammarco attended the screening.
The post-movie talk-back with the audience serves as my personal highlight of the festival so far.
They discussed the process of making the movie, the indie film industry, and provided advice for actors, filmmakers, and artists. Chris Mulkey encouraged actors and filmmakers to “Keep going!” and pursue their passions, no matter the difficulty.
Sean Astin discussed being self-sustaining as an artist while pursuing your passion, see a brief clip below:
Everyone was extremely kind and friendly! I was so impressed by their willingness to encourage others, share their experiences, and general openness and affability!
Here I am chatting with Chris Mulkey after the film:
He strongly encouraged artists to keep going, keep pursuing their passions, and to find ways to make art–no matter what. Create your own projects, forget about the money, and to “keep going!” He was also super nice and funny! Thank you for taking the time to chat Chris!
