Friendship Knows No Distance
Anne of Green Gables once said “true friends are always together in spirit.”
I believe this to be 100% true.
When I was ten years old, I moved across the country from my best friend. Now almost twenty years later, she is still my best friend. I still have a pile of old letters at my house, treasure photos from our time together, and look forward to planning our next trip together or phone date. She’s my best friend and she always will be. It doesn’t matter if she lives down the street or across the country. She’s a bestie for life. (Obviously it would be awesome if she lived down the street, though, don’t get me wrong!!)
I’ve lived in seven states over the course of my life (some more than once) and the friends that I have made around the country are still my friends. Heck, I’ve made friends that I’ve never even LIVED in the same place at the same time. And these are some of my bestest friends. And my friends move, too…one of my best friends now lives in Australia!
But it doesn’t matter how far apart we are. We’ll always be friends. And we are GOOD friends.
Because distance doesn’t change friendship. Friends are friends no matter the number of miles separating one another.
One of my best friends (and regular yoga students) moves this week to Charlotte, North Carolina for a new job opportunity.
And I’m super excited for him! Because it’s a great opportunity. Charlotte is supposed to be a fabulous city. And I have no doubt that the move will only make us better friends!
Here we are at his last yoga class with me:
How do you stay in touch with friends? Are you friends with people from around the world or country? What are your favorite ways to communicate?
I think I need to bring mixed tapes back. Those were the good ol’ days of mail. But I am a sucker for a good card. I have to restrain myself from sending funny awesome cards to New York every week! (Although snail mail may be less popular, there are some truly AWESOME SAUCE cards out there y’all. It takes all my willpower not to buy everyone and send them, just because it gives me a smile!)
I look forward to seeing all my long distance friends soon. Because there is nothing like seeing one again in person–especially when you get the added benefit of feeling like no time has passed! (Although, alas! It usually has.) But that’s the best….picking up right where you left off.
As we said in elementary school, #friendsforever. (Although minus the hashtag lol.) Here’s to that! Because I seriously know some of the best people on the planet and am so grateful to call them my friends…and get to visit them literally all around the world!!! And who knows what the future brings? I’m sure I’ll live in the same place as some of my long distance friends again soon!
