When the going gets tough, get upside down!

Last night I had trouble sleeping. Like serious trouble sleeping. Tossing. Turning. You name it.

And so, I did what I always do. Whether it be trouble sleeping, dealing with a difficult situation or emotion, or even sometimes just feeling bored, stagnant, or confused.

It’s time for….

Yoga!

But not just any yoga pose…

When the going gets tough, no matter the situation, I find a way to flip the situation. Quite literally. (Figuratively too when possible.)

I get upside down!

During the night I turn to more restorative inversions. I practiced this legs-up-the-wall variation with a block under my sacrum:

When I crave even MORE relaxation? I turn to legs-up-the wall. It’s my I-can’t-sleep go-to pose. It’s also my go-to POST-race pose. Or my handling stress anytime pose. I’ve practiced in hotel rooms, in offices, friends apartments, using trees as walls, you name it!

When the morning comes, if I need to get grounded after aΒ  bad sleep, you’ll find me in a headstand:

But sometimes I need an extra boost of energy! That’s when I’ll play with kicking up (and back down) from handstand at the wall!

And sometimes my butt decides to plant and I’ll play with a mini hollow-back handstand for some giggles:

Whatever inversion, it gets me out of my head and back into my body. Whether the purpose be to relax and restore (supported shoulder-stand and legs-up-the-wall), to get grounded (headstand), or to find a boost of energy and play (hand stand variations), I find that inverting helps me regain focus, connect to my sense of me, and find the appropriate energy and space to start (or continue) my day with greater joy, ease, compassion, and fun!

Plus, it’s nearly impossible to worry about things you can’t control when you’re upside down! My brain finds instant stillness and always connects immediately to the here and now when I go upside down.

What’s your favorite way to clear the mind, handle challenging situations, and find focus in challenging situations? Let me know!

Wow that handstand is awesome! There’s no way I’d be able to pull that off! I’ll stick with the laying on the floor one πŸ™‚ lol.

I remember taking a yoga class a long time ago where we put our feet up against the wall. And did it for awhile in the evenings and got out of the habit, so that you for the reminder to make it part of my routine again!
